Every summer brings the promise of adventure. For many children, that means school holidays, longer days, and time outdoors. But for hundreds of children in Tropoja, Albania, summer has come to mean something greater - a place to learn, build friendships, discover new passions, and believe in their own potential.

For the past three years, Digital Roots (D'Roots) has proudly volunteered with Summer Camp Tropoja, an initiative that has grown into one of the region's most impactful community programs. What began as a small gathering has evolved into a movement connecting generations, cultures, and co

mmunities through education, creativity, and volunteerism. Today, Summer Camp Tropoja is more than a seasonal event - it's a celebration of community and a real investment in the future of northern Albania.

A Camp Built on Community

Summer Camp Tropoja was founded on a simple vision: every child, regardless of background, deserves the chance to learn, play, and grow together. The camp blends educational, cultural, historical, artistic, and sporting activities so that every participant finds something that sparks curiosity and builds confidence.

Unlike traditional summer programs focused purely on entertainment, Summer Camp Tropoja is built for personal development. Every activity is designed to strengthen communication, teamwork, creativity, leadership, and respect for others - skills that stay with children long after the camp ends.

That vision is closely aligned with the mission of Digital Roots: creating opportunities that empower young people and strengthen communities through education, technology, and meaningful engagement. It's part of why our volunteer team keeps coming back year after year.

Why Summer Camps Matter

Summer is one of the most important periods in a child's development. Schools provide structure during the academic year, but summer offers a different kind of opportunity,  space to explore interests beyond the classroom.

In many rural communities, though, access to extracurricular programs is limited. Without structured activities, children often spend long stretches indoors or in front of screens, missing chances to socialize, collaborate, and build practical life skills.

Summer Camp Tropoja fills that gap.

Over five days, children immerse themselves in experiences that build curiosity, creativity, and confidence. They solve problems together, create art, learn about technology, play sports, practice English, explore environmental sustainability, and discover teamwork through interactive games and workshops. The camp's goals include inclusion, social integration, healthy lifestyles, leadership, environmental awareness, and lifelong learning  proof that learning doesn't stop when school ends, it just takes a different shape.

Three Years of Digital Roots Volunteering in Tropoja

Digital Roots first got involved with Summer Camp Tropoja three years ago, driven by a shared belief: every child deserves access to inspiring educational experiences, no matter where they live.

Since then, our involvement has grown well beyond a one-time contribution. Our volunteer team has supported planning, volunteer coordination, educational workshops, mentorship, logistics, and activity facilitation. Every year, more members of the Digital Roots team choose to dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to creating an unforgettable experience for the children of Tropoja.

Watching the camp evolve year after year has been one of the most rewarding parts of our work as an organization. What started as a collaboration has become a tradition.

Summer Camp Tropoja 2026: Our Biggest Year Yet

This year's edition showed just how far the initiative has come. More than 250 children took part over the five-day camp, the largest edition in its history  supported by over 100 volunteers, including Peace Corps volunteers serving in Albania, alongside local, national, and international participants who traveled from across Albania and abroad.

That diversity created something special: children were exposed to different cultures, languages, and perspectives, and conversations that started over games and workshops often became moments of real inspiration  encouraging kids to dream beyond their hometown while staying proud of their roots. International friendships formed naturally, and everyone, child and volunteer alike, learned something from each other.

Learning Through Experience

One of the defining traits of Summer Camp Tropoja is that learning never feels like school. Throughout the week, participants took part in:

  • Team-building games that strengthened collaboration and communication

  • Art and craft workshops encouraging creativity and self-expression

  • Music and dance sessions celebrating culture while building confidence

  • Sports activities promoting teamwork, discipline, and healthy lifestyles

  • English language activities encouraging interactive communication

  • Computer and digital literacy workshops introducing technology in fun, accessible ways

  • Environmental workshops inspiring care for nature and sustainability

  • Nutrition sessions promoting healthy habits

Each activity was designed to do more than entertain  to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and help kids believe in their own abilities.

The Power of Digital Roots Volunteers

Behind every successful activity, every encouraging smile, and every unforgettable memory stood a volunteer. Volunteers are the heart of Summer Camp Tropoja.

They arrive early each morning, prepare materials, support children throughout the day, take part in reflection sessions, and help create a welcoming, safe, inclusive environment for every participant. They're expected to model responsibility, teamwork, respect, and kindness  making sure every child feels valued.

But the impact goes far beyond logistics. To many children, volunteers become mentors. Older siblings. Role models.

For our international volunteers, the camp is a chance to experience Albanian hospitality, learn the traditions of Tropoja, and contribute meaningfully to a local community. For local volunteers, it's an opportunity to build leadership skills while giving back to the place they call home. Everyone leaves changed.

Investing in the Future of Tropoja

At Digital Roots, we believe meaningful change starts with young people. When children are encouraged to explore, create, and dream, entire communities grow stronger.

Supporting Summer Camp Tropoja as volunteers reflects our broader commitment to building opportunities where they're needed most  a natural extension of our work in technology apprenticeship and youth education. Every workshop delivered, every volunteer recruited, and every child encouraged contributes to a future where young people feel empowered to shape their own communities.

Our involvement in Summer Camp is ultimately an investment in future entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers, artists, community leaders, and changemakers. The children participating today will become the leaders of tomorrow.

Looking Ahead

As we mark three years of volunteering with Summer Camp Tropoja, we're just as excited about what comes next. Each year brings new ideas, stronger partnerships, and greater impact. We're looking forward to expanding educational activities, welcoming even more volunteers from around the world, introducing new technology and innovation workshops, and creating opportunities for even more children to experience a summer that builds confidence and lifelong learning.

Because every child deserves the chance to discover their potential. And every community deserves young people who believe they can build a brighter future.

Summer Camp Tropoja is made possible by the dedication of volunteers, partners, organizations, and community members who believe in the power of investing in children.

If you share that vision, we invite you to become part of the journey whether by volunteering with Digital Roots, partnering with us, or supporting our ongoing initiatives.

Together, we're not simply organizing a camp.

We're building confidence, creating opportunities, and shaping the future one child at a time. A Special Thank You

A huge thank you to Neda and PJ, two Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, for organizing this year's Summer Camp Tropoja with the incredible support of local volunteers, the Municipality of Tropojë, national NGOs and local businesses, and national and international volunteers, including the Digital Roots team. It was a wonderful example of what we can achieve when the whole community comes together.
